About the Book

A toolbox for life's most important moments.

The Love Mechanic opens the door to a garage of creation, renewal, and repair - a place where the relationships that hold our lives together can be examined, tended to, and made whole again.

At its heart is a simple, science-rooted concept called Mattering: the belief that you are important - to yourself and to others - that you are noticed, known, and relied upon. Mattering is a therapeutic strategy to enhance and maximize the way we love, parent, partner, work, and live.

Part memoir, part field-tested guide, this book offers tools that are flexible, universal, and easy to put into practice - for everywhere human beings interact.

You matter. You are noticed, known, and relied upon - at home, at work, in the way you love and in the way you are loved.

Prologue

Hope - that feeling of anticipation that something good may happen for us. That a crisis may be averted, a disease cured, that things will get better. No matter what challenge we face, hope focuses the mind. It strengthens the body. It girds us to face life's circumstances with a glimmer of courage in our hearts and a determination in our actions. Hope.

We live in a world of constant, unrelenting change. Technology drives societal change at unprecedented rates - shaping politics, culture, workplaces, economies, language, education, music, and art. People can feel left behind, excluded, ignored, confused. However, as the saying goes, some things never change.
